Meteosat Second Generation (MSG) is a series of four geostationary meteorological satellites - owned and operated by EUMETSAT – carrying two payloads: the Spinning Enhanced Visible and InfraRed Imager (SEVIRI) and the Geostationary Earth Radiation Budget (GERB).
SEVIRI – exploited in EVOSS for detection, quantitative measurement and tracking of thermal anomalies on ground and ash/SO2 aerosols - has the capacity to observe the Earth in 12 spectral channels.
SEVIRI carries out a complete image scan (Full Earth Scan) in 15 minutes. Each 15-minute period, or “repeat cycle”, consists of 8 segments of image data, with the exception of the HRV channel, which has 24 segments. Each segment has 464 lines of image data.
